Creative Hedge and Tree Pruning

...eyes of a surveyor, hands of a carpenter, touch of an artist...

Have you been trimming your hedge for years and now find that it is just too much work? Allow us to put our professional and artistic touch to trim your hedge. You will get a hedge that looks better than you have seen in years! We also offer shrub pruning, fruit tree pruning, chipping, mulching, and recycling.

We consider ourselves specialists because we use finishing touch techniques that no other landscaping company uses. We can straighten out the top line of a hedge by setting up a suspended string line to produce the perfect line. No other company will consider using this technique due to the time involved. We include this service in our estimates.

The result is a perfectly trimmed hedge and customers who say...

"What an awesome job, it's so close to perfect it isn't funny. Put me down on your list and let me know when it needs to be done again."

We deal with limb removal, obstacles, fences, Christmas lights, roofs, vehicles.

Have you ever tried to prune a large tree 20 feet high or more by yourself? If I tried that, I would have to climb down the ladder after every cut to see if I had altered the tree's shape too dramatically - and then it could be too much too late!

Picture this: Jeff is in the tree and you have an award-winning wood sculpture artist, standing on the ground below, indicating which major branches to cut. The result? A perfect job. We do our best to have happy customers at Trees To Please.

  • Smaragd Cedar- Typically 3 to 4 feet hand trimmed to spiral available potted and ready to plant. We also offer custom trimming of existing trees, on-site spiraling or even carved faces.

  • Topiary pruning is more popular than ever for spirals. The trees of choice are the smaragd cedars, normally used for hedges. Sandra trims them in our yard using small hand shears. The finished topiary spirals are available in pots for easy transport. They average 4-5 feet tall. Sandra will also trim topiary on site if you have an existing tree that is suitable. The largest spiral that Sandra has trimmed is approximately twelve feet tall. See Picture.

Alberta Spruce = Feng Shui

The art of Feng Shui is to arrange the environment so that positive energy may flow without becoming stagnant. If you have ever looked inside an Alberta spruce that has never been pruned you will know that the flow of air and light have been blocked.

These trees will be healthier and provide great joy when pruned in this manner.

These trees (above) were blocking the light and view as well as interfering with the sidewalk. By carefully pruning away the dead and excess material, pom poms were created, leaving a light and airy look.

Small Alberta Spruce

This tree needed some help to give it a little spizas. Sandra is giving it a trim.

Truck and Chipper

Here is a picture of our truck and chipper. We chip into our truck for removal, or we can leave the chips on site, to be recycled as garden mulch.

Sculpted Cherry Tree (above)

This tree  (above) was planted to close to its neighbor’s; I decided to control it by weaving it back into itself. This tree is a work of art in progress, as each year some of the new growth will be added to the sculpture. A tree like this is a unique living sculpture; it changes every season; it is strengthened to withstand heavy snow.

Spiral Trees

These spiral trees can be ordered 4 to 6 ft. tall in pots or sculpting can be done on trees already existing in your landscape.

Large Spiral Tree

Large Spiral Tree

This is my favorite spiral, because it is the largest that we have done so far.
It shows the owners pride in their yard and landscape.

Nature and art combined.

False Cypress

This shrub was taking up to much space, so we gave it a new look.

6.Awesome Hedge Work

A beautifully sculptured hedge. We follow the contour of the trees to trim and give definition to each tree. . The top is made truly straight using a string line and can be blocked square or rounded.

Every hedge is different and can usually be trimmed in a variety of ways according to the owner's preference. Contact us today to discuss your needs.

Broken branch - before

Broken branch - repaired

Tree Rescue (above)

Robyn called to see if we could rescue her tree that had been severely damaged by a wind storm. It was split into the main trunk. Jeff winched the tree back into place and bolted it through the trunk. We sealed the edges of the wound with pruning paste to prevent water and insects from entering. Given time, the tree will heal. We have seen this done successfully to smaller breaks where the tree has repaired itself. Proper pruning may have prevented the break in the first place. Two years later the tree is alive and well.

HEDGES, TREES, AND SHRUB PRUNING BENEFITS

  1.  Adds to property value, street appeal, overall property attractiveness.

  2. Promotes healthy tree growth.

  3. Problem trees contained and controlled, trees tend to become overgrown, overwhelming, and out of control. Without proper training branches overhang roofs causing damage by rubbing and wearing, dropping leaves and debris into gutters. Branches block sunlight leaving residents feeling subdued, as if the plants are taking over. Our trimming service alleviates these tree problems.

  4. Relief. Older folks find a great deal of satisfaction knowing their yard is taken care of to an acceptable standard and that they don't have to do it themselves anymore. Let us at Trees To Please take the risks involved, climbing ladders and controlling growth.

  5. Joy and Happiness. Emotions brought out by beautifully pruned trees and shrubs.

  6. Owner / Operators. We do the work ourselves. When we give you a free consultation and estimate we include the satisfaction of knowing that Sandra and Jeff will be doing the work from the first-hand knowledge of what you want. The owners of Trees to Please will always be on site when the work is being done.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Hedges and Trees

  • What makes you a specialist in hedge trimming?

We spend more time trimming hedges in our business than all other aspects. We have fine tuned our techniques to put a special finish to hedges. Using string lines we can create the perfect line every time. You will have a hard time finding a landscaping outfit using this technique. We have purchased new power tools just for hedge trimming only. Our tools are sharp so as to avoid the torn trimmed look. We also follow up to see the competition's work and notice the mistakes that occur such as uneven top lines, wavy side trimming, poorly shaped sides with no taper. We clean up all clipping debris as anything left in the hedge while not noticeable immediately after cutting eventually turn brown and detract from the appearance. If the hedge has been damaged by snow or wind or has grown out of control we will tie it up before trimming.

We combine the eye of a surveyor, carpenter with the touch of an artist for the perfect hedge every time. You can see the results of our work on our web site.

  • What time of the year is best?

Most well maintained hedges are trimmed at least twice a year. The first trim will be in May after the spring growing spurt. The second trim will be in late Sept. or Oct. before the fall rains. If you have an evergreen hedge that is out of control then any time is okay, except when it is hot, as in July or August. It will take a couple of growing seasons and several trims to train a hedge back to looking neat. If a hedge is trimmed to severely it may take years to recover. It is better to trim a small amount regularly.

  • Will you come back and do it again?

Just give us a call when you are ready.

  • How do you use a string line?

The string line is primarily used to straighten the top. Fiberglass masts are erected and stabilized at each end of the hedge. A construction string is tied to each and pulled tightly to take out the sag in the middle. We can adjust the height according to the evenness of growth. Variations of height often occur due to soil type or other trees shading the hedge. We usually judge by eye the height required to even out the hedge. And of course we listen to the owners request as to height preference.

  • When can you do it?

We respond to requests for estimates within 24 hrs. When a written estimate is accepted we usually complete the job in the same week.

  • How much do you charge?

Not as much as our competition. We need to see the trees to make a judgment on the amount of time required. Other considerations such as access, amount of debris and trimmings estimates on dumping fees. We will give a fixed estimate and usually try to fit the scope of the work into the owners budget.

  • Do you climb big trees?

Jeff has climbed up a 100-foot old growth fir tree in the Comox Valley, and spent 4 hours in the top where it had been topped 30 years ago. The job was to clean up all the new shoots that had been growing since the last topping. The techniques used to do the job required climbing skills similar to what he uses in Cave Guiding, where he negotiates 100-foot drops into caves. He felt quite comfortable doing the job.

  • What was your favourite accomplishment?

Without a doubt, the rejuvenation of the Pioneer Cemetery on Mission Hill in Courtenay on Vancouver Island.

We were hired by Father George of the Church St. John the Devine to trim the perimeter of the cemetery. We estimated the time, trimmed it all and recycled the chipped debris laying it out like mulch to control weed growth. This was a high profile job where a lot of locals watched the progress. There was a lot of positive feed back about the results and Father George was pleased.

From branches that were cut while working, we built a beautiful cedar arbor to accent the entrance - and everyone of the parish loved it!

  • Can you do the work when you say you can?

Yes. We usually respond within a day. Contact us now.
